KLIX®: refreshing Downton’s distribution centre to deliver annual saving of £1,000.

The Bristol Distribution Centre is part of a UK network run by Downton, one of the country’s leading independent logistics providers.

As a key distribution hub in the South West for Magners Cider, the Bristol Distribution Centre is used to handling big-name brands. Recently it took a decision to bring more well known names on to the site by choosing to refresh its 80 centre-based staff and drivers with a hot drinks vending solution offering brands such as PG Tips® and Nescafe®.

When the Bristol Distribution Centre reviewed its drinks vending service in 2011, the centre was looking for a high-quality, tailored service to meet the needs of all employees. The centre also wanted its suppliers to show the same can-do, will-do attitude as its workforce.

The KLIX solution reduced the centre’s expenditure by bringing the vending in house, so cutting out operator costs. Through its DIY option, KLIX enabled the Bristol Distribution Centre to offer a flexible drinks service which means that the centre can easily adjust the menu to suit its employees. By introducing the in-cup system, which ensures a high-quality drink in every cup, every time, KLIX was also able to improve the quality of the drinks provided.

During a 12-week trial of two OUTLOOK® drinks vending machines, one in the canteen and the other in the drivers’ rest area, KLIX demonstrated its can-do, will-do approach by further tailoring its solution to exactly meet the centre’s needs. The local KLIX Business Development Manager visited the site every fortnight during the trial to advise on adjusting the menu to exactly meet employees’ needs.

The KLIX Business Development Manager also worked closely with the Bristol Distribution Centre to monitor drinks demand and as a result was able to propose a charging approach that reduced the centre’s monthly costs by more than £80, adding up to an annual saving of £1,000. The approach means that the Bristol Distribution Centre is able to provide PG Tips Tea Bag Tea and Nescafe Gold Blend coffee - the two most popular drinks among staff – free of charge while charging 20p for other drinks. This approach enables the centre to offer quality drinks for free and minimise its costs, while at the same time offering a wide variety of high-quality speciality drinks to satisfy the needs of all consumers.

Finance Manager Lesley Jones concludes: “KLIX has provided us with a hassle-free drinks vending service that is operated by our own in-house caterers. Our drivers look forward to a refreshing drink when they are at the centre and they have given very positive feedback on the KLIX service.”
